24th of Calistril (Day 7)

We have recovered in town and leveled up. Now it is time to replenish and take out the rest of the bad guys.
But before that, we have to finish leveling up, which means … HARROW CARDS!!
Orchid gets the Idiot
Viloet gets the SnakeBite!
Tourmaline gets The Rabbit Prince
Gujarek pulls the The Betrayal – NE – allows channel Negative Energy(once) or the Crown Power(reroll any d20 roll – once)

Violet gets a note from Benjan that a messenger is awaiting her at the jail. She and Gujarek go to see what it is about. Galadhair is there and a has a package and note for her. She brings it back to Kendra’s and opens it to discover a scimitar. It was her mom’s. It has a lot of purple in it.

The pun competition is at noon.
Tourmaline – at 4th 10gp (Rogue kits are a steal!)

Violet gets super drunk in celebration of winning, she is drunk enough that she starts talking to her new scimitar.

25th of Calistril (Day 8)

We sleep off the celebration of the pun contest. Then we hear that the statue has been defiled again. We find a big “S” on the statue’s back this time. Violet is pleased to see that she is not the target. We find some tracks around the statue and follow them back towards town. We follow them to a yard. We know this is the yard of … Gibs Venice! The tracks seem to end here, we tell Benjan and says he will send some deputies to check it out.

We then head back to the prison to check out the basement. We go in the front and head to the hole down to the lower level. We use the rope ladder but still manage to fall some. Ugh.
We get down and are suddenly attacked! A group of slimy oozy creepers try to get the best of us. We resist.

As we proceed to the next room we see many skeletons lying about in prisoner garb. A choked staircase leads up through the center of the room. We go into the room and … we totally forgot to get Gujarek a mace! Maybe she can grab a truncheon from one of the skeletons! We barely fight off the skeletons. We look around to find a sign calling the area to the north The Oubliette, to the south The Nevermore, and to the west The Reaper’s Hold. And Hell’s Basement in the east (where we came in). We wait long enough for Tourmaline to gain her wits then we hold tight.

In the main chamber we head south into Ne’ermore, and we cannot open the portcullis. Gujarek takes a drawing of the mechanism and will take it to Jorfra to see if she can help.
We then head over to Reaper’s Hold and find a long hallway to another room. A room of many many cells! In a room to the south, a table holds some skulls and a body. Possibly the Marauder is here. There are undead all around us. We then see the ghostly Marauder and his ghost wife. Four skulls fly off the table, light on fire, and attack us. The Loppers hammer is highly effective against the skulls (+2). We manage to destroy all the skulls and Vesorianna grabs him and takes him away. We find some booty in the room!

We take the loot back to town, sell some back to the town council (for 1185gp).

Violet picks up her scabbard at Jorfa’s. Jorfa says she can make a winch the open the pork-ulis and that we can use the magic rope to redo the rope mechanism.

Alendru says he can magify the hammer for Jorfa for 1200gp, or for free if we organize a chance for him to study Norgorber’s Blade of Venom, which is held in the vault at the church by Father Grimburrow. Orchid isn’t into that since the Blade of Venom is super dangerous, which is why it is locked in the vault.

We check out the Silk Purse, and find out they have 3000gp to spend on any items we want to sell. They also have a ring of featherfall and a bunch of other junk.

We head back to Kendra’s to rest up and drink bone tea.

26 Calistril (Day 9)

We go into Reaper’s Hold downstairs at the Harrowstone. In the back corner is the torture room. We find a skeleton on a torture table that has had its arms cut off. We are immediately attacked by his disembodied hands. We fight through the hands and Tourmaline gets sucked into an Iron Maiden, we free her and disrupt the haunt.
Orchid begins working to set the body to rest. As she is doing that, she finds a set of keys and a badge that says Hockren. We will take that back to Vesorianna. Violet wants to take the bones out to be buried. Then, Violet finds a secret door to the area behind the portcullis that we could not get into. We decide to go that way.

As soon as we go in, Gujarek and Tourmaline begin seeing the letters of their names show up in blood on the floor and wall. They begin to freak out. Orchid sees a skeleton in a hole in the middle of the room. She jumps down the hole to take on the (assumed) Splatterman skeleton. Tourmaline and Gujarek begin to destroy the phantom blood letters that are appearing and wreck up the room as well. Once the letters are destroyed, the Splatterman appears and we attack. Tourmaline uses the axe we found in the Loppers belongings box, and it gets stuck to her hand. It is gross and covered in unremovable blood, it is cursed (so unexpected!) After everyone deals some damage to the Splatterman and his rat companions, Gujarek uses an Undead Bane arrow and takes him out!

We find some things in the pit. We head back to the main entrance and bring the warden’s body with us…

We head up to the Oubliette, to the last baddy. The Lopper! We see the lopper lop Gurtis the assistant warden’s head, we capture Gurtis in a ghost siphon.
Gujarek crits on the Lopper and uses the Crown Power (from The Betrayal) to confirm. Hits him hard!
Gujarek grabs Violet’s Undead Bane, and though it costs her some bleed, she hits The Lopper even harder!
Violet pulls her spell back and hits him again! He goes down! Vesorianna takes him.
Lopper’s cell in the oubliette has some stuff in it. It also has Gerdis’s Keys.

Feeling that the prison is now safer, we plan to deliver Warden Hawkrens body to Vesorianna and assist her in binding the prisoners forever. We also plan to split up the treasure found so far, and of course to drink some more tea with Kendra.

23rd of Calistril (day 6)

In Town
Nothing happened at the statue during the night.

In the morning Tourmaline buys the equipment for a rope ladder from the general store and takes it to Jorfa to learn secret Dwarf knots. After Gujarek saves her from the ropes (which Tourmaline says “clearly became possessed and attacked me!”). Gujarek puts together a sweet ladder with grappling hook anchors.

We buy some pharasma symbols at the temple, and head off to The Harrowstone.

The Harrowstone
We decide to enter floor 2 of the harrowstone by way of the balcony. On the balcony there is a executioners block and we get attacked by a giant bony ghost scythe. We are able to vanquish the scythe through a (mostly ineffective) mid-combat exorcism and Violet’s more traditional (and much more effective) sword magics.

Gujarek adeptly opens the door to the second floor of The Harrowstone and we file in. There are tons of skeletons, which break free from their prison cells and attack us. Tourmaline gets caught up listening to some crazy Jazz flute music and does not help much with the fight. Orchid channels lots of pos, which happens to destroy both the skellys and The Jazz Fluter of Illlsmarsh. Vesorianna’s ghost comes out of the floor and binds the spirit of The Piper.

We then go through a door to an extra large cell and see the body of Father Charlatan wrapped in chains covered in holy symbols and weights. Orchid, with a well timed detect undead, notices that Violet is now wearing a Father Charlatan backpack. We use a lot of holy water and all of Orchid’s spells and eventually we weaken enough that Vesorianna can capture him.

We check out the rest of the rooms in the 2nd floor, except the squeaky Kitchen (our party has no interest in rats) we find nothing of interest but we do get to test out the rope ladder when Tourmaline collapses a small balcony, the ladder works great!

It has not been that long, but we are out of spells so we head back to town for the day. We also plan to pick up the prisoners item boxes while we are there.

Day 5 continued…

Harrowstone
We find the gargoyle that killed the professor (we think). We enter the foyer of the prison and use the spirit board to contact the ghosts. Orchid (fails save) gets possessed and become an asshole. We pour out a 40 of holy water to banish the trickster spirits.

Gujarek is able to pick the lock of the metal door. Inside is the prisoner’s property room. In addition to the moldy remains of the prisoner’s belongings, we find a secret door which leads to an inner chamber with more valuable items (see treasure list).

In addition to the treasure items, we find 5 little chests with names attached to them. The chests correspond to the 5 super bad prisoners…

  • Splatterman – moldy spell book – Violet opens the book and sees blood red ‘V’, ‘I’, ‘O’ on the pages.
  • The Piper – masterwork flute
  • Father Charlatan – tangled mess of holy symbols on chains
  • The Lopper – hand axe (+1) covered in still wet blood
  • Mosswater Marauder – a very large smithing or light hammer (+1)

The Temple of Pharasma
We take the five boxes to Father Grimburrow who can see that they are evil and says that he can keep them safe in the locked church vault. We call for Jorfa and Alendru to get their opinions on the items and to get them in the same room. Jorfa says that the hammer is amazing! Alandru says that there is a spirit linked with each of these items which creates a duality. The items are dangerous (the spirits want to gain access to them) but they can be used to hurt the spirits.

Back at the Harrowstone
We step into the prisoner branding room and get attacked by hot brands and the fire pit. We complete an exorcism ritual in which we heal the fire pit to soothe the burn and place a small Pharasma symbol into the ghost fire. It seems to work! The fire goes out and the room becomes quiet and peaceful. We find a list of prisoners and their prison numbers, and take it with us.

In the Sewing Workshop
We find the workshop where Content Not Found: Visorianna_ was killed. We assume she is evil and attack her though the door, but she possesses Orchid through the Spirit Board and tells us that she is actually the only thing stopping the prisoners spirits from breaking free of the prison! She saw a group of cultists come to the prison two weeks ago. They took the spirit of Levar Hawkren away, prepared a ritual, and killed the professor!!! The head Evil Wizard had a staff with a black gagged skull handle, which we know is the symbol of the Whispering Way cult. _Content Not Found: Vesorianna told us that an evil spirit is present at the prison and will eventually release the prisoners. She needs us to defeat the five evil prisoners to stop them before they escape. In addition, she needs a token from her husbands body to bind all the spirts in the prison.

We move on the the Washroom and fight an animated straight jacket. In the prison entry/holding room, Violet gets bound by magic manacles. We use holy water covered bolt cutters to break the chains in the room and release any prisoner spirits. We find and kill four crab spiders that were living in the prison chapel. We find some treasure ! We look in the closets but find nothing of interest.

We head back to town for the night. Gujarek and Violet go sleep at the Warden Hawkren’s statue to see if they can catch the vandal.

Day 5 in Ravengro – 22nd of Calistril

Orchid wakes in The Mystery Circus to a disturbance in the town’s square. The prison monument has been covered in blood once again. Orchid and Gujarek head down to see it covered in more blood than there was before … in addition, there is either an ‘I’ or an ‘E’ as part of the blood. The blood is not human; it appears to be from a larger creature.

We think of things to ask the ghosts using the Spirit Board…
1. What is your name?
2. How did you die?
3. How do we lay your spirit to rest?
4. Where do your physical remains lay?

Father Grimbarrow did not know about the ghosts at the prison. To help our quest, he gives us a small bottle of holy water and offers free healing in the future.

We talk with the Father further about his knowledge of Haunts. He says the “opposites” release spirits. It may be helpful to ask ourselves what the ghosts may need in order to find peace. Some religious element is also required.
Examples include:

  • a ghost killed by cold can be removed by burning a Pharasma symbol near the haunt.
  • a ghostly witch’s hand was destroyed when bound by blessed manacles.
  • A ghostly goblet was freed from it’s Pharasma abbey prison when a monk drank from the goblet while the holy abbey bells rang.

21st of Calistril – Day 4 of our month in town

Tourmaline heads to the general store for a crowbar. The generic family running the generic general store are polite. One item of note is a full set of plate armor handed down through the generations of the generic family tree.

At the Pharasma Temple, Tourmaline finds that holy water costs 25 gp and weighs half as much as regular water. In addition, the church is very willing to take donations on their stock of potions (CLW, Restoration). They also have a wand of Cure Moderate Wounds – for the low donation price of 1,625 gp). The displayed morning star that also has a built-in container for holy water gets Tourmaline’s mind racin’ with possibilities.

Tourmaline thinks that Jorfa may be able to make a weapon (mace) that also sprinkles holy water — now if she can just figure out how to do that with some axe-style weapon!!!

At Kendra’s, we also find that we can create holy water ourselves but the cost is steep.

Violet and Kendra go to the statue and do rubbings of all the names engraved upon it. As they are walking back to the house in the evening, they see a group of young local girls (who Kendra knows) jumping rope. They are singing a chant that pertains to all of the prisoners from Harrowstone.

That night, Violet is drawn into a waking dream. She wakes in a pile of straw in one of the prison’s rooms. Outside the barred window she can see Ravengro in the distance. Blood appears on the wall of the cell in the shape of a ‘V’. After an ‘I’ appears, Violet attempts to channel positive energy, which results in a ghastly cackle and the letters ‘O’, ‘L’, and ‘E’. Before a ‘T’ appears and finalizes her name, she actually awakens in her bedroom at Kendra’s house late the following morning…

Chppy Ntes

Haunt research with Grimburrow and Kendra. They shed some light on research and removal but since each haunt is different, you have to learn about each one. With that we get some supplies together and we decide to head back to the Harrowstone. We look for the gargoyle that crushed Lorrimor. We find 4 that are interesting and we look further into them…

We set up in the front foyer of Harrowstone and as we get the Spirit baoard going. The tricksters in the front hall are no help. Tourmaline dispels them with some holy water.

Behind the steel door we find a lot of antiques. Mementos and a secret door.
Behind the secret door we find a masterwork … thieve’s tools , a bronze war medallion, a war razor, a punching dagger, and some small chests like lockboxes.
The chests have various things in them. We decide the items should be taken back to the temple. We talk to Father Grimburrow and he puts the items in the temple storage.
We talk to Jorfa and Aludren about the hammer to try and help smooth over their old differences. Not sure it went well.
Then we head back to the prison and start exploring more.
One of the rooms we open has a bunch of branding irons. We think they may have been used on the prisoners. For sure. Orchid dispels them with some positive energy and we move on.
We find the room where Visiorianna died and we talk with her spirit. After a misunderstanding, she charges us with a quest. Confront the five evil prisoners and defeat them, bring me a token of my husbands possession. His Spell book.

We soldier on and find another haunt. A strait jacket nearly kills us all! We manage to defeat it but it was tough.

Deeper in to the prison we come across more haunts. We fight off some spiders and find some holy water and then we find the stairs up and down further into the prison.

Jorfa's Enmity

Tourmaline decided that neither the shield nor the rapier would match her rugged fighting style, so she inquires, “These are beautiful. I was looking for such a high quality item, except I was looking more for a battle axe… double axe… hand axe… wood-cutter’s axe … really anything in the axe family.”

“I would love to help, but I haven’t been able to make enchanted items in almost a decade. What you see here is all that remains of my magic stock.”

“Why did you stop?” asks Tourmaline genuinely curious.

“Well, I used to work with that stuck up old wizard ”/wikis/Alendru%20Ghoroven/new" class=“create-wiki-page-link”> Alendru, but I haven’t ever since he pissed me off."

“What happened?”

“We were working on a sword that was to be my masterpiece and he got a little overzealous. He was trying to funnel to much magic into the metal and he lost control. When I struck the blade with my hammer it absorbed the overflowing energy and exploded! I got a cut on my face here.” Jorfa points to a small scar on her brow. “But more importantly, I lost my favorite hammer, Magnus. Magnus was beyond powerful, but also practiced control in all things. He was a perfect beautiful mallet.”

As Jorfa trailed off, Tourmaline grew a little uncomfortable. She knew that Dwarves were famous for their stubborn grudges, but a decade over a broken hammer seemed a bit ridiculous. She also knew she’d have to get the two working together again if she wanted an axe made.

The Town Hall Archives Part II

Orchid continues her investigation trying to locate the final resting place of Vesorianna. She doesn’t find the exact layout of the prison but finds enough references to the layout to piece together a general picture.

Dungeon

The dungeon of the prison was the entire subterranean layer and is were most prisoners (including the most dangerous) were housed. It was connected to the upper levels by a stair case that was destroyed by Lyvar Hawkran in the Harrowstone Prison fire. It was also connected by a mechanical lift to move larger items in and out of the main prison area.

Second Floor

The second floor was also largely cells. Less dangerous prisoners and prisoners awaiting execution were often held here because executions were also carried out on this floor.

First Floor

The first floor contained offices as well as the rooms necessary to run the prison. It contained an infirmary, meeting room, and property room among others.

Violet continues with the wizard. “Can you also take a look at this?” She pulls a sticky piece of paper out of her pack and grabs a mirror of his desk. She holds the mirror up revealing the writing in its correct orientation.

“I see you have more than a passing interest in necromancy,” the wizards says surreptitiously.

“So you recognize them?”

“Yes, and I’m glad to hear that you don’t.” The wizard continued, “This writing is used to create necromantic cage, if you will. More specifically, a cage that contains the undead energies tuned to the specific individual whose name is used to create the runes. If this came from the prison it seems that someone believed the spirit of Warden Lyvar Hawkran is still around after so many years.Furthermore, it seems they wanted to try and capture his spirit.”

The Unfurled Scroll

Violet and Kendra headed towards The Unfurled Scroll, a school for affluent children that teaches math, writing, history, as well as beginning arcane theory. It also serves the magical needs for the town: scrolls, wands, and the occasion cantrip for hire. The school is headmastered by Alendru Ghoroven a retired adventurer turned teacher.

They find him outside school in the north of town despite the misty overcast weather. He is adjusting the posture of a boy in what appears to be a somatics lesson. All of a sudden a pitchfork in the grass spins through the air and sticks into the side of the schoolhouse.

“That is why we practice outside, Riari,” says the wizard patiently. He dismisses the boy when he notices the two women approaching up the road. “What can I do for you misses. Need a lesson or perhaps a magic item for your adventures in the prison,” he says looking at Violet.

“I see you know of my friend Violet,” responds Kendra.

“One learns many things from beyond the veil…” he says, “also, I drink at the Laughing Demon to hear the latest gossip.”

“We are actually here wondering if you could tell us about these books,” says Kendra. Violet hands him the books."

They follow him inside of a well maintained building. The inside is divided into a classroom, a library, an research area, and a makeshift storefront around a display case. He spreads the books out on his desk. He tries to open the purple book, can not, and says. “I do not recognize this one however these three…” He continues explaining the nature Lorrimor’s Books, but unfortunately he has nothing new to add to what Kendra already knew.

He continues, “If you are interested in adding to your collection on necromancy, I recently… stumbled across this volume.” He walks to the front a pulls a book out of the display case and pulls out a book whose cover resembles dead flesh and hands it to Violet. The contents are indecipherable until Kendra waves a hand over the pages and the letters reform in Varisian. Immediately the book’s abhorrent contents become clear. It is a manual explaining how to create a flesh golem. It seems to be in excellent condition except for a small university crest stamped inside the front cover accompanied by the initials “M.C.” (flesh golem manual 7600gp)
